Let me start off by saying, Wow, what an amazing opportunity! That’s right, it’s not every day you get to have a 45 minute conversation with a man of not only such talent, but also an amazing personality, to boot! Just after 5 minutes in to my phone interview with Cary, I felt like I could just chat with him for hours. It’s too bad we live in different time zones, because he’s the kind of person I would just love to grab a cup of coffee with and pick his fashionable brain.
Never did Cary imagine that his once career as a men’s clothing store owner, would eventually land him in the role of, “Celebrity Stylist”. Making the decision to leave his Chicago job and head to LA has truly been, “life-changing” for him. Starting out grabbing clothes here and there for HBO’s Dennis Miller, word quickly got out on Fetman’s “Eye for Style”. That’s right, lucky for him, he never really had to seek out jobs, his talent brought some of the hottest publicists and stars seeking him out! Why has this work come so easy to him? Well, maybe it’s his method to the madness. His mission isn’t to create a beautiful person, he sees the beauty within the person first, and works with their own style and personality. So who are some of these beautiful people . . . Oprah, Sarah Jessica Parker, Melissa Rivers, Joan Rivers, Lisa Kudro, Catherine Zeta Jones, Heather Locklear and Julia Dreyfus . . . just to name a few.
Recently, Cary has been busy working with the host and main stars of, The Bachelor, The Bachelorette and The Bachelor Pad seasons. That’s right, you know all those fabulous clothes we see each week on this popular reality series? Well, Cary is the “guru” who puts it all together. So, I bet you are all wondering, “Where does he start and how does he go about picking out the clothes and accessories?” Well, Cary stands by a philosophy that Oprah shared with him years ago, “Even if you put the most beautiful dress on a woman, if she doesn’t feel comfortable, she won’t feel beautiful when she looks in the mirror.” So, basically, Cary doesn’t necessarily follow the trends, he first finds out what the person is about and then styles that person based on what THEY like and what THEY feel good about. And to my surprise, he doesn’t watch past episodes, doesn’t read all the “rag” magazines and doesn’t watch all the runway shows. He wants to know what the individual sees when he or she looks in the mirror, and then he goes from there. Cary gets to know his clients on a personal level and stays friends with many of them after the work is over. He’s a “relationship” guy, and I love that!
Throughout the conversation, I felt not only inspired, but grateful. Here is a man who clearly has a busy lifestyle, and yet took some time out to not only respond to my many emails, but was willing to have a very informative, relaxed and personable conversation with me. Like I said before, I had so many questions and was completely intrigued with all he had to say.
So, what advice does Cary have for stylists just starting out? “Get some classes under your belt, so you have the foundation to know what to do if you are in a punch.” There was a particular time when he had to make some stitches to a dress on the Red Carpet and knowing the basics of sewing made the task a simple and “stress free” one.
Now, I have written many times about what “Real” beauty is. Since Cary has worked with so many beautiful faces, I was very interested to find out how he defined beauty. His answer was simple, “Inner Beauty and Kindness”. I was also surprised to hear that the person who comes to mind when he thinks of “Real Beauty” was, Joan Rivers. That’s right, you heard me correctly . . . Joan Rivers. The blunt, sometimes abrasive, Comedian. Cary Fetman referred to Joan Rivers as a, “kind soul”. So it seems like although she has had a lot of work done on the outside, it’s pretty evident that her “inside” is what truly shines and stands out to him.
And after my conversation with Cary Fetman, I found out quickly that his down-to-earth honesty, and warm personality made him perfect for the job. He had the talent and inner beauty to create “beautiful” people. My chit-chat with Celebrity Stylist, Cary Fetman was one to remember!
